The Tories want kids to undergo ‘adulthood courses’ before they can drink and drive. With this latest search for a form of national service to give kids respect and responsibility, we again have a no-brainer.
As if a week is enough to do the job, tasks will include silly games and learning a Shakespeare sonnet. Give them to the army, I say – and I mean it! Why can’t the regulars and territorials open voluntary youth clubs and get involved?
With their excellent organization, they could pop concerts and sports tournaments. They could organize adventure holidays and even have them sitting worthwhile exams. And who knows, it may improve their recruitment figures.
