There is a truism about history we forget: everything goes in circles. With the latest threats by America to Iran, we should remember this. Of course, it’s only gunboat diplomacy – surely they wouldn’t be so stupid as to attack?
Iran’s nuclear programme is a problem that must, of course, be sorted. But more subtlety is required. Not because of extreme danger from Iran, but from an increasingly active Russia which is slowly backing Iran more and more.
And here lies the danger, and the truism above. The competition between America and Russia has simply been dormant during the side-show of the ‘war on terror.’ It seems to be coming alive. Yet in the intermission the west totally changed its armed forces for a new role. Conventionally, we have now left ourselves bare.
