Saddam Hussein has been sentenced to death. If all goes to plan, this barbarism will take place in two months. I can never accept a death sentence because it makes us no better than the despot. We cannot have ‘civilisation’ until we realize this.
Unfortunately, it is also the final stage of the death sentence upon his country. Iraq was a false country to begin with, set up by Britain in an attempt to sort out the problems of the Middle East. It has only ever been viable under dictatorship.
This is the case with so many supposed countries, and without it, it will self-destruct. As to the role of free nations, regardless of how we got here, we have a duty to ease its disintegration. Except America. The Arabs will never trust the Americans again.
