A senior British general says troops are making things worse in Iraq. What is going on? No, not with Iraq, but the nerve of a general who thinks he has the right to speak. Whether right or wrong in what he says, he is wrong in saying it.
This follows a growing tradition, the most obvious offender being Sir Ian Blair, Commissioner of the Met. We employ politicians to do politics, not generals or senior policemen. If they want to comment, let them first resign.
There are hints that some politicians agree these utterings. If so, they are destroying our freedoms. A politicized army or police force is an instrument of repression and we should be very angry. That we are not is a sign that it is working.
