GIMME SOME SPACE

Britain is overcrowded and we’re becoming increasing angry. So says the latest Social Trends report. I suppose we’ll be pondering that as we sit in our spacious living rooms, looking out to our spacious gardens, our kiddies all in a room of their own …
150 years ago. Man contemplates lack of space in his tiny two-up-two-down, back-to-back terrace with a dozen kids running about in the room through lack of garden, tiring themselves out so as to sleep soundly piled three high.
The man DID have a lack of space then, but he also had a tight knit community and family values. He had someone to share his worries, unlike today where a third of the population lives alone.
