So that’s it. Gordon Brownski WILL be the New Pretender. After steamrollering any opposition, he will take over as Prime Minister in June. No vote from the party. No vote from the electorate. It is a sad day for democracy.
Of course, he won’t be there long. The last time a Prime Minister took office in such circumstances was Alec Douglas Home, who replaced Supermac. He was out within a year. Then there’s the political reality that those who crave this office rarely hold on to it.
I suppose it is a case of democracy having some built in protections, even if the people don’t seem to care. So I haven’t lost all hope. Perhaps we should paraphrase another Scottish character, from Dad’s Army: Gordon, ‘you’re doomed.’
