Nicolas Sarkozy is the new President of France. With 53% of the vote he beat his socialist rival. Right wing, he nonetheless wants to aim for unity in the country. However, I hope his utterances get better than this. After all, what leader doesn’t?
It will, of course, be a difficult job for him to do. Unity might not be so easy for the former Interior Minister who, two years ago, condemned rioters who were burning cars by the hundred so vehemently.
This will no doubt be remembered over the coming days, and France needs to be careful that his hope for unity doesn’t begin with disunity. Indeed, his first success may be Green – a distinct lack of cars on the Parisian streets.
