Channel 4 (UK) say they intend to go ahead with broadcasting pictures by French photographers taken at the crash in August 1997. This is despite the please from Princes William and Harry to respect their mother and not show them.
Are the pictures in the public interest. It depends who’s public you’re talking about. Do I want to see them? No. Do you? Can you say, with your hand on your heart, that they’re in the public interest?
The use of the term ‘public interest’ is, and has always been, a con. Anyone can claim public interest if they can get a group of people together to agree. But in the main, Channel 4’s reason is the same as it has always been.
Channel 4 is the channel of the sensational, forever pushing the boundaries of taste and decency forward. This is fair enough. Maybe we DO need channels like this. But it leaves a bad taste in the mouth when they attempt to justify themselves morally.
