Since the introduction of student top-up fees in UK universities, student’s complaints have shot up 44%. This is being put down to ‘consumer culture.’ Which is hardly surprising - after all, if you pay, you want service, don’t you?
It won’t be long before the Student’s Union becomes exactly that – a union, demanding this or that, and having an absolute right to do so. After all, we demand good service from other businesses, which is what universities have now become.
The universities themselves will, of course, see it different. You see, they’ll only like the part of capitalism that is good for them. Well, they should have thoughts about that before going down this rocky road.
And maybe they should also think about the death of learning which will inevitably follow.
