Knife crime is in the media again in the UK. Stabbings are on the rise, causing a new plague throughout the country. And what is the immediate reaction? Ban knives. So that’s it, then. If people will stab others, make sure no one ever has a knife.
Yes, of course, we should do everything in our power to make sure people do not carry knives with them. But why do so many of our youths carry knives today? The obvious answer is that they feel they need to have protection.
Surely that should tell us where the real problem lies. And it is not in the availability of knives, but in the unavailability of signs that the streets are safe places to be. And a good place to start is to get police out of their comfy cars, and walking the streets once more.

Makes sense the police walking the beat will make a difference.

Hi Mark,
I can remember, in my youth, police were everywhere. They never appeared threatening and people felt safe.
Criminal history shows that big crimes still happened, but petty crime and assaults were way down.
Makes sense.
