There has been much said about the UK’s self defence laws in recent days, after Justice Minister Jack Straw joined the clamour to wear Tory clothes at the Labour Party Conference.
However, the problem is not with the laws, which are quite adequate, but with the idiots who decide who should, and who should not, face prosecution.
As the law stands, is you come upon someone in your home and you feel threatened, you have the power to defend yourself using reasonable force. As to what is, or is not, reasonable force, there are two ways of deciding – common sense, or by jury.
The ‘problem’ is that the Police have forgotten how to use common sense, and charge people if there is doubt. Yet in most cases, the only doubt is to the degree of Police competence.
