Councils in England are to be given permission to charge for rubbish thrown away. This ‘pay-as-you-throw’ scheme adds up to nothing more than an additional tax on an already over-taxed populace.
The reason given is to encourage people not to throw away waste, but recycle. Of course, recycling already goes on to a massive degree in the UK, and I’ve said before, isn’t it time big business took some of the strain as well?
This does not seem to be happening. Big business provides the packaging, and the people are left to sort it out. Something, here, stinks – and not just the rubbish. Indeed, it stinks almost as much as the government using the environment to squeeze yet more taxes out of us.
