The death of Sir Edmund Hillary is being recorded around the world. The first man to conquer Everest, with Sherpa Tensing, he broke down the final land barrier – the roof of the world. Yet he did much more than this.
With the news of his success coming at the time of the coronation of Elizabeth II, it was the final element of greatness of a country that had been THE super power for so long. But from that achievement, the UK began its inevitable decline, topped by the dismantling of the structures and traditions of Britain by NuLabour.
Sir Edmund’s success on Everest was a symbol that we had surely reached the top. Maybe the British people should use his death as another symbol – enough is enough.
