You could feel sorry for Home Secretary Jacqui Smith. Her admission that she would not feel safe walking the UK streets after dark was predictably met with howls of protest. Yet, maybe she was trying to be sympathetic. Well … really?
You could feel sorry for her, but don’t. It is unlikely that anything comes out of a NuLabour minister’s mouth without a committee scripting the words. So forget feelings of sympathy, and insert: this might make her seem more human.
Well, it doesn’t. What it does tell me is that this party continues its arrogant posture of listening to the people without ever listening at all. If they did listen, they’d discover, once again, how to treat people as human beings, rather than an electorate they disdain.
