The Pentagon is to try six 9/11 plotters through military tribunal. The death penalty has been asked for. Personally, I disagree with the death penalty, but that is up to the US to decide. But this is obscuring a wider problem with these proceedings.
This concerns just what the attack on the World Trade Centre was. Basically, was it a crime, or was it an act of war? By using military tribunals, America is making a clear statement that the latter is the case.
This is a mistake. The attack was civilians attacking civilians. It was therefore a horrendous crime. By placing the tag of ‘war’ upon it, you offer it a validity it does not deserve. Crime is crime. Keep it so.
