Boris Johnson has just released his ‘crime manifesto’ in his bid for London Mayor. His ideas include gun and knife scanners at transport hubs, new rape crisis centres and live CCTV on London buses.
Some of these ideas are reasonably good, but the best selling point in this campaign is Boris himself. Yes, I know he’s a Conservative ‘toff’, and seen as a bit of a buffoon, but would a buffoon have been as successful in journalism as he has been?
Of course not. What Boris is is an eccentric personality. And this in itself should be enough to recommend him. Let’s face it, as Mayor he would only be a front man anyway. But what politics needs are personalities like Boris.
Nothing else gets people to drop their political apathy and vote.
