A US Navy warship has successfully shot down a satellite threatening to pollute wherever it crashed. A significant feat, it was, however, jazzed up in certain circles into a move of Hollywood proportions.
Predictably, there have been complaints. China is saying this is a blatant militarization of space. Which is, of course, true. But do we forget the Strategic Defence Initiative of the 1980s?
Infact, this latest incident is little more than a publicity stunt. The US wants a new defence screen against rogue nuclear weapons. Moves to place sites in eastern Europe are already antagonizing the Russians.
Why do I feel the message, here, is: missiles on the ground, or above your head. Make your choice.
