Jonathan Powell thinks we should talk to Al Qaeda and the Taliban. The former Blair aide advises The Guardian that the success of the Northern Ireland peace shows a link must exist with terrorists.
In some cases, this may be true. In Northern Ireland, it seems to me real peace came thanks to Al Qaeda, and America’s sudden hatred of all terrorism. The IRA funds dried up, so they had no possibility of continuing a terrorist agenda.
If terrorists are after a clear political goal, such as the Palestinians, then maybe there is room for talks. But when the stated aim is the total eradication of your way of life, without compromise?
No wonder Blair’s government was so incompetent. Get real!
