That’s why I’ve learnt to be optimistic. You see, problems can be

obstacles or opportunities. The latter is best, leading me to

plan for the worse and hope for the best. That way, most surprises

THE BUTLER DID IT

Such a cliché, the detective remembered: the ultimate

whodunit – the butler did. Well, as he looked at the picture of the

crime scene, he realised those old writers were predicting the

future. You see, he KNEW the butler had dunit – and also that

he’d outwitted the forensics. Them butlers are damned good

at valeting.

to see friends and family again; AND in an environment where we

remembered the quarrels, the last one resulting in where I was

now. And I suppose the service decided me to visit one of them

again. Oh yes, I intend to often visit my murderer.

DECAPITALISM

I’ve got a new word: decapitalism. I think this best describes

the state of the west over the last 20 years. Rather than being

capitalist, we’ve actually been deconstructing the major parts of

what capitalism is all about.Let’s go back to its modern beginning.

This came in the philosophy of Adam Smith, who realised that

capitalism was a good idea, under certain conditions. One of these

conditions was a moral framework to curb excess. We can see why it

was attractive to ditch this – for a time. But capitalism also

needs something else of importance – a sense of ‘service’ to go

alongside profit. Without this, it is inevitable that capitalism

will become dictatorial, ‘cos it treats its customers with

contempt. Do you recognise this world?

And then – gone. And the evidence pointed to her death. But I never

believed it; and finally, I tracked her down. At least, it looked like her,

but her new dowdy life and dowdy dress? ‘It was all so pointless,’ she

said, ‘and I’m not going back.’ I left her dead.

FUNNY THINK

I want to moan about our knowledge. Why, for instance, isn’t it

funny? Now, I know it’s a serious business, but shouldn’t we have

a bit of fun with knowledge, too? After all, without fun, anything

can become a bit of a bore.So, I want fun put into knowledge.

Infact, if we did this, more people would be interested in it. So

knowledge should go alongside other areas of life, hoping a little

bit of it rubs off on others. Einstein, for instance, was a fun

sort of guy. He understood this principle. Indeed, I think I’ll

have a bit of fun with one of his famous quotes: Humour without

knowledge is lame, knowledge without humour is blind.

SIR BOBBY ROBSON

BRIT NEWS: Sir Bobby Robson has died. I never agreed with all he did for football. One of the first to buy foreign players for his team, in my view it was the game’s death. A team that carries a city’s name, but has few players from there is a fraud. And the massive increase in pay and spin-offs turned the game into a business. This said, his career as a football manager held disappointments and marvelous victories in a rollercoaster ride that kept the nation enthralled. And he was also a true gentleman – rare in the business of football. For this he will be sadly missed.

BRIT NEWS: The Home Secretary has been asked whether Al Qaeda sympathizers could have infiltrated MI5. Such a possibility will cause the obvious shock and horror, especially when I’d say it is inevitable. Such organizations cannot possibly be as secure as we would like, and throughout the history of spying, the Mole has been a regular visitor. Don’t people remember the Cold War, the double agents such as the Burgess, Philby, etc? So if we’re told there are no ‘sympathisers’, I’d advice them to look again.

Blogging highlights a major problem with the net. There is simply too much information out there, meaning people become very narrow in their reading matter. This is one reason why individual pieces here have now got shorter. But a question: does too much available information mean that, to stop overload, we actually acquire less?

LIFE'S A BITCH

Life’s a bitch – and I really mean that. Problems mount constantly. That’s why I’ve learnt to be optimistic. You see, problems can be obstacles or opportunities. The latter is best, leading me to plan for the worse and hope for the best. That way, most surprises are good ones. Life IS a bitch. As soon as you realise that, you can enjoy it.

CRIMINAL MENTALITY

We say of psychopaths: how could they do such things? Well, quite easily. Some researchers have noted ‘psychological distancing’. Whether through upbringing, or other reasons, some people develop an inability to understand love or similar emotions. They only appreciate the negative. And with this attitude, a victim is so easily dehumanised.

BIG BANG

Big Bang isn’t the only explanation of the universe. There is also Steady State, which says the universe regenerates itself constantly. This idea is shunned by the mainstream, but could philosophy lie behind this? We live in a linear world where everything has to have a beginning and an end. To not have such is just so … well – eastern!

Sci Fi: They sat silently but busied themselves. We all worried about the children. Obesity had been conquered with treatments, but now another problem arose. The children had friends – had relationships. They saw them on the screen every day. But when reaching adulthood the scientists began to ponder upon electronic sperm.

MODERN LITERARY NOVELS

As a general rule I dislike modern literary novels. I love the classics, but with the modern I found myself playing 'search for the story'. Maybe writers place all value in the individual today, but they seem to be all about an angst-driven search for self.

WHY SCEPTICS?

Many people are sceptical of the paranormal. Why is this? One answer is fear, and the denial involved. Another is the modern paradigm, where science seems to discount such things. But should anything that is experienced be discounted? Only if you deny that many people have such experiences – which leaves them rather frightened.

Sci Fi: They felt good to be back on Homeworld. It had been a rewarding fact finding mission. Earth was about to become conscious, they knew, so as mind parasites, they had inhabited humans for as long as it took to know all they wanted to know. Several thousand years each and they’d lived inside hundreds. And the only effect on the humans? The sense of their minds, and the feeling they had lived before.

IMPORTANCE OF DREAMS

We believe we make rational decisions about our future, but is this so? The vast majority of our thoughts and knowledge come from the unconscious, and when we dream, this irrational area of mind rules. Could it be that this process, filtering into conscious thought, directs us more in life than reason suggests?

But often we forget that behind every action is a thought, and that thought is expressed in words by a thinker. Fiction: Oh, how he hated them – the way they lied and cheated to get their way. There was nothing worse than a bent cop, and this latest episode was messy. TV WATCH: Primeval returns. The BBC does well with Sci Fi & this is ITV's only challenger. It was a risk. Monster comes through anomoly, heroes send it back. Could easily be a bore after a time, but in second series they introduced conspiracy, and now they're searching monster myths of the past for evidence. They've kept it fresh.
